OSCILLATE CD details

Following the 3 very successful METRO BREAKS cd and vinyl releases on the nice+smooth label, this is our fourth compilation of Toronto-centric DnB since 1998.

Many of the selections are exclusive and unreleased tracks from some heavy-hitters in the international scene including Visionary (Flex Records / Hustlin' Beats/), Illfingas (Furious Records/Vinyl Syndicate), D-Region (Furious), Andy B (Hardleaders) Moonstarr (Compost Records) DYNASTY feat. SUNYA (Furious/Jedi), DJ Freedom, Kinder Atom and others.

Some key cuts from the CD have just been released on 12" vinyl internationally through nice+smooth sub-label OSCILLATE RECORDINGS.

The disc is digitally mixed by Gerald Belanger, with the usual wide assortment of styles and structures the Toronto DJ is well known for.

Toronto release party AUGUST 24th 2002 at SURFACE - 12 BRANT ST. featuring live performances and dj sets from nearly all the dj's and producers from the cd.

ARTIST PROFILES

Visionary are prolific Toronto producers MARCUS SILLS and DAVE WHALEN, who have been releasing rough and steady beats since 1996 through top UK labels FLEX, HUSTLIN BEATS and on local labels ON POINT, DUB 2010, DIVISION ONE and VINYL SYNDICATE. They also were featured on the 3 previous nice+smooth METRO BREAKS d&b compilations, each time with an exclusive cut. DJ Marcus can be found headlining raves and clubs across Canada with every major player from the UK scene, with detailed weekly reports on his 8 year strong radio show "The Prophecy", airing on CIUT 89.5 FM.

Tommy Illfingas is another name that's been around the Toronto party scene for years, and with his bona-fide anthems, "Another Sound" and "Killing Floors" on Vinyl Syndicate and "Absolute Control" on Jedi, his production career has taken off. D-Region who remixed Illfingas top-selling track "Union Station", also currently records alongside Illfingas for well respected imprint Furious Records, with past heaters on Jedi and Allied Recordings.

Dynasty, along with DJ RA is responsible for the runnin' weekly SILK event at the Living Room on Thursday nights, as well as the bosses of JEDI RECORDINGS. Vocalist Sunya (photo to the left) has slowly been making appearances around Toronto at events, singing overtop the DJ's to incredible audience reaction.

Andy B is a British ex-pat who moved to Vancouver 8 years ago to help launch the drum and bass scene and make a solid reputation for himself as a premier west-coast dj and producer. Last year, Andy moved to Toronto and founded a new clothing line FAMILY BUSINESS, and spins weekly at Balance Thursdays inside Nasa. His recordings for heavyweight UK imprint HARDLEADERS have brought him international attention within the gloabal scene.

Moonraker are a Boston based live breakbeat outfit currently riding a wave of popularity for their jazzed-out funk-soul mania featuring fabulous vocalist Kelli Skaar. The offshoot duo Stuhr are Moonrakers producer Nate Greenberg and Toronto's Dan Chen, who co-wrote and produced this version of their smash single "Organic Love". The group is continually broadening its fan base with regular performances in Western Mass. Maine, Rhode Island, Toronto and New York City.

Freedom aka Amanda Lachapelle has had a long and strange trip since she began her dj'ing career over 8 years ago. She's appeared on the cover of Toronto's EYE WEEKLY twice, released her own mix-cd METRO BREAKS NXT LEVEL, and performed in over a hundred clubs in a dozen countries (and living in a few of them!). Amanda has finally settled back in Toronto where she is currently running the Chicks Dig It Monday weekly again at the Apothecary. Her latest musical collaborator Dorc aka Mark Przybylo brings a choppy hip-hoppy cut-up feel to this project, and plans on doing more work with Freedom in the future.

Sol Azul are a live group of bossa junglists featuring vocalist Rubi as well as Juan Dino Toledo on guitars, producer D'Arcy McGuire on bass & programming, Julie Hickey on percussion and Marcus Sills and David Whalen (VISIONARY) on beats and mix. They are currently preparing a full-length CD for nice+smooth to be ready in 2003.

Queensyze aka Jen Roworth (photo right) decided to take her music to the next logical step when she built a studio and co-founded a label in 2001 entitled "Tune Inc.". She has been playing jungle for over 6 years and producing for over two. You can guarantee to hear at least a few Queensyze dubplates when you see her play. When spinning she DJs hard ass, heavy jungle with a smooth, almost sneaky mixing technique. She has recently joined the "Chicks Dig It" roster and is closely affiliated with Ganja Smile Productions.

Otis & Toxic are a Toronto duo currently hosting several radio shows on CIUT FM and CHRY FM. Otis and Toxic each blend their unique styles when it comes to production, as demonstrated on their first release "Conned Ascension". With Otis currently performing live with "Hibernate", and Toxic dj'ing all over Ontario, Quebec and the Northern US, expect bigger things to come.

Mutt is 20 year-oldToronto bedroom producer and U of T student Sean Roman, who was turned on to the sound back in grade 8 whilst hearing the "Renegade Airwaves" show. Sean submitted his track 'Filthy Animals" after he found out about the compilation from a posting on the TORONTOJUNGLE.COM message board.

Kinder Atom is the collective of nice+smoothies featuring Gerald Belanger, Chris Drost, Kris Helstrom and Heiki Sillaste. They have always contributed new unreleased tracks for the METROBREAKS compilations and find themselves listening to Jungle on long road trips. The Kinder Atom crew are currently assembling their 5th full-length CD for release in 2003, which will feature not only drum and bass but electro, house, techno, downtempo, ambient and dub.

Moonstarr has been getting heaps of praise worldwide lately from the likes of Rainer Truby, Peter Kruder and Gilles Peterson for his crazy bossa broken beats, with his latest release picked up by the Compost folks in Germany. People may not know that Kevin Moonstarr's past and future still include some heavy sick analog d&b tracks, as demonstrated on "Who Really Understands". Check some wicked previous efforts on his label Public Transit Recordings, and his latest full-length album "Dupont".

Ottawa's Liquified is all about insipiration - from inside and out - pushing the next level of future soul, garage, and deep drum&bass into the next century, bringing it live like few others have done before. Headlining at this summer's World Electronic Music Festival, their profile has been raised higher and higher since the release of their sophomore effort 'Maintainin'. Since LIQUIFIED's inception in 1997, producer and songwriter Roh has sought out the freshest movers on the electronic scene in Canada. Hooking up a double vocal attack with Nicky Brodie and Melissa Wheeler - a powerful blend of the heart of soul, deep house, the sexiness of jazz, and the intensity of breaks. Added to the equation are standup / electric bassist Stu Watkins and turntablist DJ Pho on the decks - a truly unique blend of styles and perspectives, coming together to represent our different tribes of sound and motion.

Subrythm is an up & coming Toronto based duo (Adam King, Rob Fines) who have managed to make some fresh sounding waves despite their short three year partnership, by merging an eclectic variety of sounds from ambient drum and bass, to jazz infused triphop, garage, and on. Having two indie albums behind them they are now finally ready to break out into the public ear with their brand new progressive d'n'b track, "Glow Steam Pop" written for and currently featured exclusively on the Metrobreaks 4 compilation. The song showcases their unique sound blend, incorporating the slick guitar workings of local musicians Mark Pellizzer and Graeme Cornies to create an intelligent sonic journey.
